Budget Buddy iPhone widget walkthrough

Drop a live snapshot of your cashflow on the Home Screen, then interact with it without launching the app. This guide covers the production widget from installation to interpreting every figure and insight.

Hint

Spend a minute teaching new teammates the widget gestures during onboarding. A quick demo of tapping the header to add a transaction keeps daily logging on autopilot.

Warning

Interactive time-range controls require iOS 17 or later. Earlier versions still display your totals but do not react to taps.

Widget at a glance

Budget Buddy ships two widget sizes. Both share the same soothing blue–green canvas, colour-coded income and expense figures, and a one-tap shortcut into the Add Transaction form.

  • The widget compares the current period to the immediately previous window.
  • Tap anywhere to jump straight into logging a purchase or deposit.
  • Choose from five ranges: 7, 30, 90, 180, or 365 days.

Add the widget

Bring the widget to your Home Screen in seconds. Every step mirrors Apple’s default interaction so the flow stays familiar during demos.

  1. Touch and hold any empty area on the Home Screen until the app icons begin to jiggle.
  2. Tap the + button in the top corner to open the widget gallery.
  3. Search for Budget Buddy or scroll to find it in the Finance category.
  4. Pick the small or medium widget preview, then tap Add Widget.
  5. Drag it into position and tap Done to lock it in place.

Explore the small widget

Compact and glanceable, the small widget surfaces totals alongside quick comparisons so you can sense momentum in a heartbeat.

  • Income appears in green and expenses in red, each with a bold total and a percentage change versus the prior window.
  • The bottom caption highlights the active range, for example 30d vs prev.
  • A circular arrow button cycles through the five time windows on iOS 17+ so you can explore trends without opening the app.

Explore the medium widget

The medium layout expands the summary with controls that encourage deeper inspection while keeping the app closed.

  • A clear title at the top spells out the comparison such as 30d vs prev 30d.
  • A row of pill-shaped buttons lets you jump directly to 7, 30, 90, 180, or 365 days. Your selection sticks for the next refresh.
  • Income and expense blocks match the small widget, complete with colour-coded totals and change percentages.
  • A notes area spotlights recent wins or cautions with matching green and red highlights.

Read the numbers

Every figure is rounded to whole amounts using your preferred currency format, ensuring the widget mirrors the rest of the app.

  • Comparisons always evaluate the selected time window against the immediately preceding window of the same length.
  • Currency symbols appear before or after the total based on regional settings.
  • Income growth displays a green percentage with a + sign.
  • Higher expenses glow red, while decreases in spending appear as green negative percentages.
Hint

If the previous window recorded no activity, the widget shows 100% to highlight brand-new movement. Pair the note with a coaching tip about building a history for richer comparisons.

Switch time windows

The default view compares the last 30 days with the 30 days before that.

  • Available options cover 7, 30, 90, 180, and 365 day spans.
  • The small widget cycles through each range via the circular arrow button.
  • The medium widget exposes the full range picker so you can tap any option instantly.
  • Budget Buddy remembers the range you choose after every refresh or device restart.
Warning

On devices running older iOS versions, range changes are locked to the default 30-day window. Use the app’s Filters menu instead.

Understand insight messages

The notes area shares timely coaching moments without overwhelming the layout. It stays empty when there is no fresh data to avoid clutter.

  • Insights rotate between highlights such as biggest income or expense, net savings, spending ratios, and average transaction size.
  • Green keywords celebrate wins like income, savings boosts, or no-spend streaks.
  • Red text flags cautionary signals like high expenses, subscriptions, or heavy spending ratios.
  • Each refresh can surface one or two insights depending on recent activity.

Keep data fresh

Budget Buddy recalculates the widget every time you open the app, add, edit, or delete a transaction. Behind the scenes the totals for all ranges update together so switching windows feels instant.

  • The widget stores the time of its last refresh and updates the "last updated" label every minute.
  • Even when the app stays closed, the widget checks in roughly once per hour to fetch new data.
  • Each recalculation instructs the widget to reload immediately for the crispest numbers.

Work with multiple currencies

Track finances globally without losing context. Budget Buddy converts every transaction into your main currency before running the comparisons.

  • The widget keeps the correct currency symbol and placement for every stored range.
  • Insights referencing the largest account keep its emoji for quick recognition.
  • All calculations remain apples-to-apples across different currencies.
Hint

Encourage teams managing multi-currency budgets to label accounts with emojis—those icons appear directly in the widget insights for faster scanning.

Quick actions

Every widget tap opens the Add Transaction form, so capturing spending becomes a reflex. Range changes never yank you into the app, letting you explore metrics in place.

  • Tap anywhere on the widget to log a new record right away.
  • Adjust time windows directly from the widget on iOS 17+ with zero context switching.

Tips for best results

Coach new users through these habits so their widgets stay insightful from the very first week.

  • Record transactions promptly; otherwise the widget will show zero activity and no insights.
  • Watch colour cues—green beside income means growth, while green beside expenses marks a welcome decrease.
  • Use a 100% change as a prompt to celebrate a new habit or log historical data.
  • Review the notes panel regularly for streaks or spending ratios worth celebrating or correcting.
